Better Off Dead

Seven words: "Two Dollars! I want my two dollars!"

Remember this flick? The kid chases Cusack's loser-geek-stud character of Lane all over the the place (including up and down and all around the ski slopes) for his two dollars. Certain movies stand apart from the rest of the pack in our memories and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason--like in this case.

True John Cusack aficionados love this example of his early work. It's bizarre and includes surreal dream sequences--like when Lane crafts an animatronic, Van Halen rocking hamburger during a stint at his part-time job. The foreign exchange student adds to the enjoyment in the mix with the typical lost in translation adages and language screw ups. In the middle of this, Lane has his mind set on offing himself, but never quite succeeds at it. Nor does he manage to get the girl back.

Directed by Steve Holland. It's just a lot of nonsensical fun. Cusack is oozing with early adolescent angst..a precursor of what's to come from him in his far-reaching acting career.
