This Disney film is set in 1935, Chicago. John Cusack plays the friendly vagabond Harry with rascally charm. He courts Natty Gan (Meredith Salenger) when she hits the back roads after her father, Sol Gann (Ray Wise), has left to pursue work in Washington state, so that he can provide for her.
With the assistance of Harry and his beloved traveling companion (a wolf), they make their way westward in search of her father. Without the aid of Harry, Natty certainly would have never made it through the challenges that are presented to her.
The journey is highlighted by some stimulating visuals. The outdoor photography is breathtaking and the depression-era production design is awe-inspiring. The plot is tighly-woven and peppered with morality; which is nice as it doesn't come through as didactic. The showcase of talent is solid, across the board.
