John Cusack delivers yet another celebrated performance as news reporter John Kelso, who's been transplanted from the north to Savannah, GA. Finding himself in the midst of a high-profile murder investigation, he decides to stick it out in Savannah, with all the southern hospitality and other percs.
Adapted for the screen from John Berendt's runaway book of the same title, it is directed by Clint Eastwood and provides a luscious eye view of the lush south.
Cusack is accompanied by the delightful transvestite Lady Chablis and the odd coupling makes for entertaining cinema. Also heavy on their time spent together is Cusack's John with Kevin Spacey's Jim Williams, nouveau riche antiques builder. The bulk of the film showcases John conducting investigative work for his book and helping Jim out of the murder case--a case in which he is the lead suspect.
By the end of the movie, we've all come to love Cusack once more. A bonus is the role that Savannah, herself, plays in the movie. As John says, "It's like 'Gone with the Wind' on mescaline."
