Cusack plays Nicholas Easter, a jury member for a high-profile trial in which a young attorney has been slain by a disgruntled ex-employee. The widow is suing the gun manufacturer. Adapted from the John Grisham story.
Rankin Fitch, played by Gene Hackman, is in charge of jury selection. He uses video surveillance, wire-taps and vintage stalking to be sure to receive an empathetic panel. Fitch has to duke it out with the plaintiff's attorney, Wendell Rohr, who is played by Dustin Hoffman.
This movie is a showcase of the talents of Hackman, Hoffman and Cusack. Cusack's Easter character has been described as 'carrying the show with spontaneous finesse, oozing casual charm and clever intelligence.' The three will lie, cheat and steal (figuratively) to score the outcome of the trial that is most desirable to their raison d'etre.
