Sixteen Candles

Ah, one of those rites of passage of growing up for those in my generation. A John Hughes extravaganza, starring none other than the dynamic duo of Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall = Eighties Box Office Giants.

You cannot overlook the role of Bryce, played by John Cusack. He is one of the three top geeks in the holy triumvirate. King of the Nerds. Well, of course, that title will forever belong to Anthony Michael Hall, no matter what beefy masculine roles he may currently be taking. But Bryce is good, Bryce is real good as one of the two who fall into the shared second-in-command role at John Hughes High in Chicago.

It's the story that centers around Molly Ringwald and her well-meaning parents forgetting her Sweet Sixteen, in their absorption in her big sisters upcoming wedding planning. Molly has a major crush on Jake, who is super cool and goes out with the Queen of the Popular. It is only through the cunningness of Anthony Michael Hall's character that Jake and Samantha are able to eventually hook up. Jake is, at the end, able to give Samantha the Sweet Sixteen she deserves.

And what girl growing up didn't secretly wish for a birthday cake in between you and your own version of Jake, as you were seated--Indian style--no less, on the dining room table.

Make a wish!

Truly an iconic feature film. A must-see, if not for Cusack in one of his early roles, deftly on-the-money playing the quintessential dork, but for Long Duck Dong.

"No more yankee-my-wankee."

Ah, the Donger. Full of what is now considered very un-pc dialogue and all sorts of magic. A breath of fresh air that will surely go down in cinematic history (in fact, it already has).
