Cusack plays Denny Lachance in this coming-of-age classic based on 'The Body; ' the novella by Stephen King. Four preteen-ish boys head out in search of a dead body and end up coming to terms with the past and their uncertain futures, unexpectedly maturing in the process. It truly becomes a journey of self-discovery.
Gordie (Will Wheaton), the central character, is conflicted and in mourning over the semi-recent death of his big brother--flashbacks and/or dream sequences star John Cusack in this role. With all-star performances that showcase an emotional complexity seemingly impossible for such a display of youth, it is truly an iconic film. The late, great River Phoenix does a brilliant job in his portrayal of Teddy Chambers -- best friend to Gordie. Corey Feldman is succinct in his depiction of Teddy Duchamp; especially in his ability to convey the frustrations of teen angst in regard to the mixture of shame and pride a ill-received parent can bring to a life.
This is one for the books. It's heartfelt and ages well. It's work that all actors and crew on board were tremendously proud of; and with good reason. A stellar achievement by director Rob Reiner.
